These works represent the apex of the interchange between the art and design facets of my creative practice. Inspired by fly-poster walls in nearby London, I designed and printed posters in the spirit of Dada, using imagery and phrases drawn from my subconscious, which I then layered, ripped, and tore in combination with acrylic paint, spray paint, and hastily scribbled oil pastel words. The aim was to enter a state of flow and play as fully as possible - a trance-like state in which creative decisions were guided by instinct.
Although the meaning behind the pieces was unclear at the time, I have since come to understand them as a kind of release valve for the visual overstimulation of contemporary Western life, as well as a quiet lament for the perceived decline of society. Small portraits of birds and insects appear within some works, reflecting my fascination with the constant tension between nature and the sprawling metropolises of contemporary life. References to the digital world, traffic signage, neon, and other visual symbols we encounter daily are also embedded throughout the compositions.
