This series was an attempt to find balance between competing layers of expressive painting. I sought harmony not only in colour but also in texture, masking certain areas to create clean lines that contrast with the drips and splashes elsewhere, allowing the compositions to resolve into a coherent whole.
I find this tension between loose, expressive freedom and tight, controlled order deeply satisfying, and it mirrors the way I experience my inner world. My emotions often feel like powerful, unruly forces, with the structure of thought cutting through them. Like much of the work that followed, the method reflects my belief in the importance of moderation and balance - guiding principles in my life, and a wider appreciation of the forces that govern nature and the laws of the universe.
